Ferry Commuters in Staten Island

2004~2006

The ferries shuttle 24 hours between Manhattan and Staten Island N.Y.Staten residents who commute by the ferries are manual workers in Manhattan. They may be grouped into new immigrants or illegal aliens who hop to be immigrants. More than 40% of the U.S. population is immigrants which accounts for one third of the population growth in the U.S. As such, the U.S. is a country of immigrants and the U.S. will cease to exist as it does now without them. If the immigrants stopped working in the cities of the U.S. including Manhattan, the entire U.S. economy will crumble. In 2006, people marched on the streets in protest of the new immigration law. The picket that they held read “We are America!” While on the ferry, they put aside the harsh reality for a while and give themselves up to the sweet American dream that ‘Americans is the land of opportunity.’

Perhaps, it is their happiest time although it lasts only for less than thirty minutes on the ferry between the Staten Island and Manhattan.
